Olmsted County Big Day results 5/13/02

Participants:  Dave & Diane Squillace, Jerry Pruett, John Hockema, Chuck Juhnke, Bob Ekblad

Total Species:  133

8
Ducks
(12/8)

7
Shorebirds
(19/7)

22
Warblers
(23/11)

11
Sparrows
(13/8)

(the numbers in parenthesis are record high/low for the last 10 years)

The total is quite respectable - 5th high for records dating back 18 years (152 in 1994; 143 in 1999; 142 in 1996; 137 in 1997; 133 in 2002)

NOTABLE FINDS:
White-eyed Vireo at Chester Woods (at the spot where we got Ruffed Grouse last year - no grouse this year) - second record
Western Tanager in SE Rochester - south of Oakwood Cemetery - third record
Boneparte's Gull at the East Landfill Reservoir  - first record
5 grebe species - only second records for Eared and Western and third for Horned
Red-breasted Merganser (hadn't seen one since much earlier in the spring) - third record
Connecticut Warbler (heard) - first record
Mourning Warbler (in Brian Ekblad's backyard) - third record

NOTABLE MISSES:
Redhead and Ring-necked Ducks (seen the day before in the East Landfill north bay and the day after right out in the middle)
Short-billed Dowitchers and Baird's Sandpiper (seen the day before at the South Landfill and again the day after - blame the rain?)
Kingfisher (seen the day after on the west side of the road at East Landfill and also at the Oxbow park entrance - blame the rain?)
Carolina Wren (a no-show - twice, the second time we missed by 15 minutes)
Northern Flicker (haven't seen one for a while)
Purple Martin (a no-show - there have been some there, just not on Monday)
Only one Swainson's Thrush and no Gray-cheeked, Wood or Veery

Didn't get Woodcock, Wood Thrush or Barred Owl - didn't get back to Oxbow at dusk like usual (too much fun with the Western Tanager and Mourning Warbler)

Sightings a day or two after Big Day:
The Loggerhead Shrike was on the gravel road north of the Byron Elementary (but not on Big Day).  There were also Ring-billed Gulls and a Common Loon on the East Landfill (but not on Big Day).

There were also more shorebirds at the South Landfill Reservoir  with Black-bellied Plover, Wilson's Phalarope, Dunlin, Semi-palmated Plover, Semi-palmated Sandpiper, etc. (but not on Big Day)

Had a great time.  Thanks to all those who participated.
